What is proof of work for AI services, not cryptocurrency?

For AI services, proof of work means the checkable evidence that a job was actually performed: a record of each step, what it produced, and a receipt for it that the client can verify. It has nothing to do with the cryptocurrency term, where the same words name the computational puzzle miners solve to add blocks.

The collision of terms confuses buyers in both directions: crypto readers land here expecting mining, and business readers avoid the phrase fearing it drags tokens into a conversation about invoices. The business meaning is older and plainer: proof of work is what a contractor shows so the paying side does not have to take "done" on faith. For AI services, the modern form of that showing is the per-step record.

What qualifies as proof, in this sense, has three tests. It is contemporaneous: created as the work ran, not narrated afterwards. It is specific: per step and per deliverable, not a general claim about a team's diligence. And it is checkable by the other side: the client can verify a receipt, at https://zambo.dev/verify/ or with the open kit, without asking the producer's permission or trusting the producer's dashboard. Summaries, screenshots, and exported chats fail at least one test each, which is why the phrase has converged on records.

If you are buying AI services, ask for proof of work in this sense and judge the answer against the three tests. If you are selling, produce it in this sense and let the cryptocurrency meaning stay in its own world, where it belongs.

Checklist: the three tests for AI proof of work

1. Contemporaneous: was the evidence created during the work, step by step? 2. Specific: does it attach to this job and these steps, with dates and producers? 3. Checkable: can the paying side verify it independently, without the producer's help? Artefacts that pass all three: per-step receipts in a job record, a handover with a recorded acceptance. Artefacts that fail at least one: chat exports (fail 1 and 3), screenshots (fail 1), status dashboards (fail 3), testimonials (fail all three).

Worked example

A passing artefact, openable now: https://zambo.dev/handover/45434a17-4afc-486a-9646-e689bcee4297 , a job whose steps were saved as they ran, whose receipts recompute at the verify page, and whose acceptance the client recorded. That is proof of work for an AI service, in full, with no mining anywhere in sight.

Frequently asked questions

Is proof of work the same as a receipt?

A receipt is the per-step unit; proof of work is the whole showing, the job's receipts together with the record they sit in and the acceptance on top. Asking for proof of work gets you the set; the receipts are what make the set checkable.

Why do some AI tools call their logs proof of work?

Logs are evidence of a kind, and the phrase is unregulated. Run the three tests: a log you must trust the producer not to have edited fails the checkable test. The tests, not the label, tell you what you are holding.

Does proof of work involve tokens or wallets for the client?

No. In the service sense, the client needs a browser: open the record, run the check, record the decision. Wallets belong to the cryptocurrency meaning and to how some agents pay each other, neither of which is this page's subject.

A handover gives your client one proof link with verifiable receipts to review, then Accept or Flag.
